Reviewed: August 26, 2026. December is winter across China, but “winter” can mean dry sub-zero air in the north, damp cold in parts of central China, mild afternoons on the southern coast or severe exposure on western plateaus. If the trip begins earlier, compare the November weather guide; for the travel week itself, use official forecasts and warnings rather than a national monthly average.
WMO climate normals are 30-year reference averages, not a trip forecast. CMA reporting shows that Chinese winters can swing between cold and warm periods. The useful question is therefore not “What is China's December temperature?” but “What are the coldest exposed stop, the highest elevation and the most weather-sensitive transfer on this route?”
Start with the China climate guide, then check each city 7–10 days out and again before mountain, road, ferry or flight days. Cold waves may bring rapid cooling, strong wind, rain or snow; road icing can delay or close transport. Daylight also varies by latitude, so confirm local sunrise, sunset and last-entry times rather than relying on one figure for the country.
Beijing often has freezing nights and dry-feeling wind; Harbin is usually much colder. Snow may fall, but a snow-covered city on a chosen date cannot be promised. Use thermal base layers, a wind-resistant insulated coat, gloves, a warm hat and grippy footwear; reduce exposed activity when cold-wave or road-icing warnings are active.
Harbin's ice and snow venues publish their own opening dates. Do not equate “December” with a fully operating festival: check the operator's current notice, ticket channel, temperature rules and transport plan before committing a day.

Guangzhou can feel cool during a cold surge, especially indoors without strong heating, while Sanya is generally warmer. Pack a light jacket and rain protection even on a southern route. For beaches, follow lifeguard, wind, wave and swimming notices; warm air alone does not establish safe sea conditions.
A southern itinerary can prioritize food, architecture, coastal walks and short outdoor blocks, but should retain indoor alternatives and realistic transport time during holiday or weekend demand.

Lhasa can have bright sun and very cold nights; ultraviolet exposure, altitude and dehydration still matter. International visitors should verify current permit and organized-tour requirements. Use a gentle first day and seek medical care for worsening symptoms rather than attempting to “push through.”
The replacement photograph shows actual December snow in Urumqi Children's Park, correcting the previous geographically mismatched image. Xinjiang forecasts must be checked for the exact city, valley or pass; distances are long, road ice is consequential and a clear Urumqi forecast does not describe every mountain route.

Temperatures are often less severe than the far north, yet wind and humidity can make outdoor waits uncomfortable. Snow or freezing rain varies by event and year. Pack layers that work indoors and outside, protect against rain, and keep a rail or road buffer when an official ice warning is issued.
1. Rime Island near Jilin City
Focus: rime-coated trees, Songhua River winter scenery and early-morning photography

Rime requires a particular combination of moisture, temperature and wind, so it is never guaranteed—even in winter. The replacement image accurately shows frost-coated trees near Jilin. Check local observations before the early start, stay behind barriers, protect batteries from cold and avoid standing on unverified river ice.
Location: Wulajie area, Longtan District, Jilin City, Jilin Province; confirm the current official access point and transport arrangement.
2. Laojun Mountain
Focus: high-mountain Taoist architecture, winter ridges and possible cloud or snow scenery
Snow, a cloud sea and open summit paths cannot be promised. Check the scenic area's official ticket, cableway, wind and ice notices before leaving Luoyang; wear traction-appropriate footwear, remain on open paths and carry enough insulation for queues or a stopped cableway.
Location: Luanchuan County, Luoyang, Henan Province; use the operator's current entrance and shuttle instructions.
3. Harbin Ice and Snow World
Focus: large-scale ice construction, illuminated installations and managed winter activities

Opening dates and individual attractions vary with construction, temperature and safety checks. Use only the current first-party announcement and ticket platform. Dress for long exposed periods, schedule indoor warm-up breaks, keep phones and spare batteries insulated and follow posted rules on slides or elevated structures.
Location: Songbei District, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province; verify the operating venue and metro or shuttle plan for the selected season.
4. Changbai Mountain
Focus: deep-snow landscapes, managed winter recreation and volcanic mountain scenery

Wind, visibility and ice can close summit access while lower areas remain open. Choose one managed resort or scenic zone, not an overpacked circuit; confirm the day's shuttle, cableway and trail status, rent suitable equipment from qualified operators and never enter a closed alpine area.
Location: Changbai Mountain area across Yanbian and Baishan, Jilin Province; establish the correct gateway before booking hotels or transfers.
5. Weizhou Island
Focus: volcanic geology, village landscapes and a comparatively mild coastal break
December can be comfortable, but ferry disruption, wind and rain remain possible. Reserve through the authorized system, keep a mainland buffer before flights or trains, follow cliff and beach barriers and treat swimming as conditional on local safety notices.
Location: Beihai, Guangxi; verify the current passenger terminal, sailing notice and island transport rules.
6. China Snow Town
Focus: snow-covered roofs, managed viewpoints and Northeast winter scenery

Snow depth and appearance vary, and cold, crowds or road controls can change the visit. Use authorized transport and accommodation, confirm inclusions in writing, avoid informal snow vehicles, respect residents' spaces and carry an emergency layer independent of the vehicle heater.
Location: Shuangfeng Forest Farm area, Hailin, Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang Province; confirm the officially designated visitor route.
7. Yabuli Ski Area
Focus: lift-served skiing and structured winter-sport instruction

Yabuli contains multiple operators and slope products. Match terrain to actual ability, use a qualified instructor, wear a helmet, inspect rental equipment and accept weather or lift closures. Snowmobiling or sled activities add risk and should never be treated as automatic package inclusions.
Location: Yabuli Town, Shangzhi, Heilongjiang Province; confirm the exact resort and station transfer before payment.
8. Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces
Focus: water-filled terrace patterns, village landscapes and changing dawn or dusk light
Reflections depend on farming schedules, water, cloud and viewpoint conditions; sunrise color is not guaranteed. Remain at established viewpoints, do not enter working fields, ask before photographing residents and keep the route slow enough to support community-run accommodation without staging daily life.
Location: Yuanyang County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province; verify local road and viewpoint access.
Cold northern routes
need a complete cold-weather system rather than one heavy outer coat: a moisture-managing base layer, insulating mid-layer, windproof coat, warm hat, gloves and insulated shoes with grip. Carry lip protection and spare power, but do not rely on alcohol or vigorous exercise as a warming strategy.
Milder southern routes
still benefit from a light waterproof layer, long sleeves and one warmer piece for cold fronts, air-conditioned transport and unheated interiors. For Sanya, add sun protection and suitable beach clothing but let lifeguard and weather notices determine whether swimming proceeds.
Harbin winter events
must be confirmed season by season. Marketing pages may show a previous year's dates or a partial trial opening; verify the specific venue, entry window, weather policy and refund terms through the current official channel.
Christmas and year-end activity
is commercial rather than a nationwide public holiday. Some hotels, malls and restaurants offer events, while many places operate normally. Confirm any meal, closure or special program directly. Travelers continuing after New Year should use the January weather guide and refresh every booking against current winter warnings.
